Turning a passion for art into a business can be overwhelming, especially without any formal business background. Wessam’s journey with DELITELABS demonstrates how the right tools, mentorship, and community can empower artists to transform their creative pursuits into business opportunities.
Discovering art as a calling
With a scientific background as a geologist, Wessam always had a passion for art. While geology was a practical career choice, art remained a cherished hobby. It wasn’t until relocating to the Netherlands from Syria in 2015 that Wessam began exploring the possibility of turning this creative passion into a career after one year of creating artworks.
“Initially, I created art for myself without any intention of sharing it with others,” Wessam recalls. A pivotal moment came when a Dutch language coach recognized his talent and encouraged him to showcase his work publicly. This led to his first art exhibition.
Joining DELITELABS
Later, Wessam discovered DELITELABS entrepreneurship program that helps aspiring entrepreneurs build their businesses from scratch. Coming from a non-business background, Wessam enrolled to learn the essentials of turning art into a sustainable business.
“At DELITELABS, I gained tools and guidance that helped me navigate the intersection of business and creativity,” Wessam shares. Through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative activities, he learned how to craft a business model, identify target audiences, and pitch ideas effectively.
“Public speaking was a significant challenge for me; back then, I was very shy. However, DELITELABS pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Wessam shared. With encouragement from mentors and peers, Wessam gained confidence and improved his communication skills.
From ideation to execution
Participating in two programs at DELITELABS, Wessam not only refined his business concept but also tested innovative ideas.
“The programs allowed me to experiment with workshops, validate concepts, and learn from both successes and failures,” he explained.
The mentorship he received, particularly from an artist mentor, helped him to understand practical aspects such as sourcing materials.
By 2018, equipped with a solid understanding of business operations, Wessam officially launched his art business. He created a website, established a network, and successfully showcased and sold his artwork across various platforms and exhibitions across Amsterdam.
Evolving through education
As time passed, Wessam realized the need to deepen his knowledge. Initially, he enrolled in a new bachelor’s program with an interest in marketing, but during his studies, he discovered a particular passion for finance. This led him to pursue his bachelor’s degree in International Finance and Control.
“I realized that many artists struggle with the financial side of their businesses,” Wessam notes.
“My goal is to bridge this gap by offering creative financial consultancy tailored to artists.”
With expertise in both art and finance, he aims to empower fellow creatives to navigate the complexities of budgeting, pricing, and financial planning.
About the style: hand-drawn geometric expression
Wessam’s art style is defined by Hand-Drawn Geometric Expression. He aims to blur the boundaries between contemporary art and traditional craftsmanship by using contrast and geometry. Contrast plays a vital role in his works, expressed through materials, colors, and effects. This dynamic approach directs viewers’ attention, adds energy and depth, conveys emotion, and communicates profound ideas.
Overcoming challenges and looking ahead
Currently balancing academic commitments and artistic endeavors, Wessam acknowledges the challenges of managing time and adapting to ever-evolving social media trends, which he relies on to promote his artwork. His future plans include establishing a dedicated studio space.
Wessam takes pride in inspiring and supporting others. “Adding value wherever I go is my driving force,” he affirms. Whether mentoring emerging artists or helping friends with their ventures, he is committed to making a positive impact.
